ACC women earn first victory

SAULT STE. MARIE–The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team got in the win column for the first time this season, defeating Lake Superior State’s JV team 76-33 on Monday.

Brooke Nguyen scored 13 points and Emma Jore had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Dakota Prevo added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lumberjacks (1-3), who broke open a close game with strong play in the third quarter.

“We played sluggish for the first two quarters, but (in the second half) we played well, we played together and really shut LSSU down,” ACC coach Bobby Allen said. “I’m hoping it carries over to Saturday.”

ACC led 27-23 at halftime, but upped its lead to 51-28 after three quarters.

The Lumberjacks host their first game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday. ACC will play Glen Oaks at 1 p.m. at Park Arena.

The ACC men’s basketball team suffered a tough defeat on the road against the Lakers, falling by a final score of 95-89.

The Lumberjacks ran into a hot shooting team in the Lakers and struggled defensively to keep LSSU in check.

“We ran into a very good shooting team. We have good moments where played well, but we need to improve our team ball,” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “They shot 33 free-throws compared to our 14 and that really hurt us. I’m looking forward to playing a home game on Saturday.”

The Lumberjacks were led by Chris DeRocher who poured in a team high 30 points. Logan Guenther added 16 points and Steve Nicolas recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Alpena falls to 0-4 on the season and will host Glen Oaks on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the home opener.
