Cardinals win SVC opener

ONAWAY — Despite not playing their best volleyball, the Onaway Cardinals came away with a sweep of Central Lake in the teams Ski-Valley Conference opener on Tuesday, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16.

“It was nice to get our first conference win out of the way because we are trying to win a conference championship again. Central Lake did a good job and were really prepared for us tonight, but we did a good job mixing it up and were smarter attacking as the match went on,” Onaway coach Steve Watson said. “I was pleased with how the girls adapted and they worked hard tonight. I’m very happy, but we still have a lot of work to do and we can definitely get better.”

Breya Domke led the Cardinals with 13 kills, 13 digs, three aces and a pair of blocks. Jackie Sellke dished out 22 assists filling in the setter role, Sellke also recorded nine digs, three kills and two aces. Cloe Ehrke had 10 digs and six kills, Malaurie McLean finished with five digs, five aces and two kills. Jordan Larson added 15 digs and Lexi Horton chipped in with three aces.

The Cardinals are now 6-8-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Onaway will return to the court next Tuesday when it hosts Inland Lakes.
