Alpena relay team sets new record at national meet

GREENSBORO, North Carolina–Members of the Alpena High track team broke a national distance medley relay record during the New Balance National Outdoor track and field championships this past weekend in North Carolina.

The quartet of Josh Smith, Aden Smith, Jadon Duncan and Drew Seabase finished the distance medley relay in the Emerging Elite division in 10:12.38, about 100 meters in front of the second place team from Summit, New Jersey.

The same group of four also set a new school record in the 3,200 relay, finishing 14th in 7:51.39.

Those two performances were just a few of the highlights from Alpena athletes over the weekend.

Josh Smith finished 17th in the Emerging Elite mile (4:20.62), Aden Smith finished 28th in the Championship two-mile (9:32.73), Maddy Boyd finished 10th in the Emerging Elite two-mile (11:00.84), Gabe Bullis cleared a season-best 16 feet, 1 inch in the pole vault for a 10th place finish to better his own school pole vault record and Eli Winter had a discus throw of 159 feet, 11 inches for a 35th place finish.
