Unable to hold on

Lumberjacks surrender lead, swept by Schoolcraft

Alpena Community College center fielder Jessica Marwede reaches out to make a running catch during the third inning of game two in a doubleheader against Schoolcraft Community College on Sunday at Alpena High School.

For the first time this season the Alpena Community College softball team looked like it was on the verge of winning a game in convincing fashion.

After dropping game one 14-2, the Lumberjacks game out in game two and strung together some hits and runs throughout the first four innings as they led 9-5 after four innings, but Schoolcraft responded with a huge 10 run sixth inning to complete the sweep and defeat ACC 17-9 on Sunday at Alpena High School.

Alpena held the Ocelots scoreless after two innings and the Lumberjacks wasted no time jumping on the board.

Alpena rallied with two outs in the home after of the first after the first two batters of the inning were retired, Jasmyn Schultz reached base with a single and Brittany Decker walked to set up Makayla Price who blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence to give ACC an early lead.

Alpena extended its lead to four when it added a run in the second as Karah Dunson walked and later scored on an error and the Lumberjacks led 4-0 after two frames.

Schoolcraft scored three in the third to cut the lead to one and after holding the Lumberjacks in the third, the Ocelots scored two more in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.

Schoolcraft’s lead did not last long as the Lumberjacks went back on the attack and scored five runs in the home half of the fourth.

The first three batters of the inning reached safely as Alexis Ferguson and Dunson both reached on errors and Emily Vivian drove in Ferguson with her second double of the day to the center field fence. Dunson later scored on an error to help ACC regain the lead and Schultz singled home Vivian.

The Lumberjacks added their final two runs of the inning when Morgan Dove laced a two-out double that plated Schultz and Decker to give Alpena a 9-5 lead after four innings.

The Ocelots continued to chip away when they scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to two before exploding for a 10 runs in the sixth to take a 17-9 lead and mercy the Lumberjacks after six innings.

Offensively for Alpena, Price hit the three-run homer in game two and Dove doubled in two runs. Dunson reached base in all three plate appearances with a single, walk and reach on an error. Dunson also scored twice.

Decker walked and scored two runs, Schultz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jessica Marwede hit a double and Vivian doubled, drove in a run and scored once.

The Lumberjacks got off to a rough start in game one as Schoolcraft combined for 14 runs over the first four innings to cruise past the Lumberjacks.

Alpena scored its only runs of the game in the first inning when Vivian led off with a double to center field, scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schultz. Marwede scored on a single from Dove and that was all the Lumberjacks could collected in the opening game.

Alpena was held to just five hits, four of which came in the first inning. Vivian, Marwede, Schultz, Decker and Dove each had a hit apiece in the game on defeat.
