ACC drops pair of close games to St. Clair

PORT HURON — The Alpena women’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 54-51 loss to St. Clair Community College on Wednesday.

The Lumberjacks fell behind 40-29 with 2:45 left in the third quarter, but clawed their way back into the game and cut the lead to 47-46 after a pair of Taylor Livingston free-throws with 3:52 left in the game. After a St. Clair basket, the Skippers took a three point lead, but Brooke Nguyen buried a triple to tie the game at 49 with 2:34 left to go in the contest.

Unfortunately for ACC, they were unable to convert on a pair of free-throws in the final seconds and suffered a tough defeat.

Seaver recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and ripping down 12 rebounds, Livingston led ACC with 14 points and Emma Jore dished out seven assists.

The ACC men also suffered a tough loss, but gave No. 18 ranked St. Clair all they could handle, but in the end fell by a final of 79-75.

The Lumberjacks caught fire and went on a run to end the half, outscoring St. Clair 21-2 to close out the half and scored 11 straight to finish the half.

The Lumberjacks held a double-digit lead early in the second half, but St. Clair made a comeback in the final nine minutes of the game as ACC saw its lead slip away with 4:33 left to play.

The Lumberjacks were able to regain the lead and held a 73-70 advantage with 1:59 to play, but were unable to get another big shot to fall as St. Clair avoided the upset.

ACC was led by Tim Hopkins who scored 18 points, Tristan “Big Country” Smith finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Logan Guenther added 10 points.
