Alpena boys XC team tops field at Northern Michigan Championships
GAYLORD–Josh Smith broke a course record and the Alpena High boys cross country team was named Grand Champion of the Northern Michigan Championships on Saturday at Michaywe Pines Golf Course in Gaylord.
Maddy Boyd had a big for Alpena too, breaking the women’s program record for 5,000 meters. Boyd finished sixth in the girls race in 18:30.1, breaking the record previously set by Taylor Stepanski in 2011 (18:39.5).
Smith won the boys race, setting a new course record with a time of 15:41. Drew Seabase (3rd, 15:48.83) and Aden Smith (4th, 16:00.12) weren’t too far behind Josh Smith and gave Alpena three finishers in the top five.
Alpena’s boys team finished with 42, well ahead of second place overall McBain (136) and well ahead of its closest divisional competitor, Traverse City West (165).
Other finishers for the Alpena boys included: Aidan Day (12th, 16:55.99); Clay Donajkowski (22nd, 17:09.80); Jacob Kochanski (23rd, 17:13.02) and Sam Tuscher (39th, 17:29.37).
Alpena’s girls team finished ninth overall with 237 points. Behind Boyd, other Alpena finishers included: Molly Dickinson (18th, 19:40.81); Kaylee Rondeau (51st, 20:42.06); Alexis Reynolds (77th, 21:40.46); Anna Young (85th, 21:55.63); Tiffany Foster (92nd, 22:00.68) and Malley McGuire (23:05.85).
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday at a regional at Saginaw Hertiage.
