Cards win Ski Valley opener; Huskies fall at home

CENTRAL LAKE–The Onaway volleyball team got Ski Valley Conference play off to a winning start on Tuesday after defeating Central Lake in three sets.

The Cardinals improved to 8-5 overall after defeating the Trojans, 25-8, 25-4 and 25-14.

Mallorie Neelis had 14 assists, 10 aces and three kills for Onaway and Breya Domke had nine kills. Calley Selke had nine kills, nine aces and three digs and Jackie Sellke had four kills and three assists. Malaurie McLean added two kills, three assists and nine aces.

“We could’ve very easily played a down match tonight, but the girls came out and played well in all facets of the game,” Onaway coach Steve Watson said.

Onaway and Rogers City will both play in a tournament in Petoskey on Saturday.

Burt Lake 3, Atlanta 0

ATLANTA–The Atlanta volleyball team showed a little bit of rust on Tuesday and suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Burt Lake in three sets at home.

Atlanta lost the match 22-25, 10-25 and 7-25 and struggled all night to return Burt Lake’s serves.

“Burt Lake did have some amazing servers and the girls just couldn’t get it (the ball) back,” Atlanta coach Dawn McSwain said.

Jaidha Chippa had four digs and a block for the Huskies and Hailee Brown had a good night at the net for Atlanta.

Atlanta’s JV team topped Burt Lake in three sets, winning 25-8, 25-21 and 15-6.

Andrea Jadrich led Atlanta with four kills, five aces and three digs.

Atlanta plays at Mackinac Island on Tuesday.
