A milestone victory

Tom Lahner, Courtney Nunneley take top honors at 50th annual City Open

News Photo by James Andersen Tom Lahner, left, and Courtney Nunneley took top honors on Sunday after the final round of the 50th annual City Open at Alpena Golf Club. Lahner earned his third City Open title in four years, separating himself from the pack for a five stroke victory. Nunneley won the City Open in her first time playing and became one of the tournament's youngest winners at 17 years old.

Tom Lahner picked a special year to join elite company.

Lahner separated himself from a crowded field and fought through the weather to earn top honors at the 50th annual City Open on Sunday at Alpena Golf Club.

The win gives Lahner his third City Open title in four years and he joins Bill Peterson, Jim Boynton and Phil Straley as the only three-time male winners of the tournament.

“It feels great. I’m not from Alpena, but I’ve been here for 10 years and it feels good to win it three out of four years,” Lahner, who won back-to-back titles in 2014-15, said. “I’m hoping to win another one next year.”

Alpena High School senior Courtney Nunneley claimed top honors in the women’s flight, carding a two-day total of 165 to earn a City Open title on her first try.

News Photo by James Andersen River's Edge Golf Club and Alpena Golf Club co-hosted the 50th annual City Open this weekend and winners were crowned in a half dozen different flights. Tom Lahner (men's championship flight), Courtney Nunneley (women's first flight), Tammy Sobeck (women's first flight net), Brynna Smith (women's second flight), Trevor Trevor Clissold (men's second flight) and Zach Ross (men's first flight) kiss their trophies after winning their respective flights.

It’s been an eventful summer for Nunneley, who recorded her first hole-in-one last month and becomes one of the City Open’s youngest winners at 17 years old.

“It feels great. With only being 17, going into my senior year it’s a great way to start off the year,” Nunneley said. “It feels great and it’s an honor for me. None of my family has made to this type of place and I feel great to put my last name up on that list.”

Lahner shared the lead at 77 with John Hoos and Dave Karschnick Jr. after a frustrating first round at River’s Edge Golf Club on Saturday. Lahner led Karschnick Jr. by two and Hoos by three at the turn Sunday after shooting for par at 36.

Lahner gave himself more of a cushion on the back nine, earning a birdie on No. 10 and eventually finishing with another 36 to post a final round of 72 and a two-day score of 149.

Karschnick Jr. bogeyed four of the first five holes on the back nine to fall back and Hoos fell into the same trap, earning bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11.

By the final hole, Lahner had a sizable six shot lead, even as the final group finished up in a pouring rain.

Karschnick Jr. and Hoos both tied for the third place at 155 after carding final round 78s.

Tyler Skiba, the 2009 City Open winner who trailed the leaders by four shots after round 1, took second place at 154.

Nunneley shared the lead with Tammy Sobeck with a net score of 67 after round 1 and ultimately won the tournament by keeping herself out of trouble in a way that many in the field could not.

“If you can stay away from trouble, you’ve got a good chance of winning,” Nunneley said. “At River’s Edge, there’s a bunch of water. There’s a lot of places you can get in trouble and you’ve got to keep that ball straight. You’ve got to make sure you make two putts, but the biggest thing is staying out of trouble.”

News photo by James Andersen The 50th annual City Open began Saturday at River's Edge Golf Club. After the first round, a small ceremony was held in commemoration of the event's 50th year and organizers and former champions were recognized. Former champions in attendance included Gisela Schreier, Tyler Skiba, Jerry Skiba Jr., Bill Peterson, Dave Karschnick Jr., Tom Lahner, Brett Anderson, Mary Sue O’Brien, Maggie Skiba, Sue Geyer, Todd Skiba and Phil Straley.

In a field that included three former women’s City Open winners, Nunneley’s gross score of 165 (actual score without handicap), topped Sobeck by 10 strokes. Sobeck’s net score of 132 made her the low net winner ahead of Kathy Kolson’s 148.

Windy conditions contributed to high scores and many of the tournament’s former champions who played found themselves trailing by a wide margin at the end of round one.

Still after one round, Hoos, Lahner and Karschnick only paced the field by a thin margin as four other golfers sat within four shots of the lead.

“I didn’t actually play my best yesterday, but I just kind of hung in there and my putting and chipping were really strong and got me through,” Lahner said. “The pin positions and the wind won yesterday.”

Other flight winners on Sunday included: Zach Ross in the first men’s flight; Trevor Clissold in the second men’s flight (141); Bill Yahne in the men’s senior flight (134) and Brynna Smith in the second women’s flight.

The flags are signed by former City Open winners and some of them flew on flag sticks during the open round of play. Each of the flight winners on Sunday was awarded one of the flags.

For Nunneley, winning the tournament will be a lifetime memory, but she’s also hoping the win means there are good things on the horizon for her final high school season.

“It’s definitely a springboard. It’s a once in a lifetime kind of thing,” Nunneley said. “I’m having a great year and I’m hoping it continues on to my high school season.”
