In a battle of momentum, the Rosedale 12U baseball team had the final swing on Friday.

Buoyed by a four-run fifth inning, Rosedale came out on top in its 2017 Cal Ripken Michigan state tournament opener, defeating Alpena White 8-5.

Mykel Golden and Ton-reece Westley each had an RBI double and Kole Waterman had an RBI single in the fifth to propel Rosedale to victory.

Waterman came around to score in the inning as well, scoring on a balk.

The four-run outburst broke a 4-4 tie and gave Rosedale the lead for good after a pair of Alpena rallies.

A home run by Kadyn Budnick tied the game at four in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Rosedale led 2-0 after one and a half innings, but Alpena rallied back in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Alpena scored a run on a balk and another on a passed ball to tie the game.

A pair of passed balls allowed Rosedale to take the lead back in the top of the third and Alpena was held in check offensively until the bottom of the fourth.

Alpena gained a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning after an RBI single.

Avery Samp tripled with two outs in the sixth inning, but Westley got a strikeout to end any hopes of one last Alpena rally.

Alpena White continues pool play today with a game against Alpena Blue at 8 am and a game against Macomb Clinton at noon.
