Local athletes headed to D4 finals

EAST JORDAN–More than a dozen local track and field athletes qualified for the state finals during a Division 4 regional on Friday in East Jordan.

Hillman junior Billy Kolcan will have busy day next week as he qualified for the finals in three events. Kolcan won the 300 hurdles (41.00) and finished second in the long jump (20-2) and high jump (6-1).

Kolcan and other Division 4 athletes will compete in the finals on June 3 at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.

Whittemore-Prescott won the boys regional with 187 points. Hillman was fifth (49), followed by Fairview (9th, 27); Onaway (10th, 23); Alcona (12th, 18); Rogers City (13th, 13); Posen (14th, 4) and Mio (15th, 2).

East Jordan won the girls regional with 136 points. Alcona was fifth with 45 points, followed by Fairview (7th, 41); Rogers City (8th, 34); Posen (9th, 17); Onaway (10th, 15); Hillman (11th, 14) and Mio (14th, 2).

Kolcan will be joined by teammate Brandon Banks, who qualified in the 1,600 run after finishing second at regionals (4:34.74). Emilee Noffze also qualified for the Tigers, after finishing second in the high jump (4-8).

Alcona pole vaulters Brooke Shultz and Rose Schopfer finished 1-2 at regionals with heights of 8-6 and 7-6 respectively. They’ll be joined by teammate John Sharboneau who finished second in the discus (129-2).

Posen will have two athletes at the finals as Kelsey Jakubcin qualified in the shot put (3rd, 33-10) and Lindsey Randall finished second in the 400 dash (1:03.65).

Rogers City will also send two athletes after Emily Malocha won the 1,600 run (5:34.25) and Luke Augsburger took third in the high jump (5-11).

Fairview was the only local Division 4 team to qualify a relay team for the finals and the Eagles also qualified in two individual events. Fairview’s girls 400 relay team of Sarah Handrich, Andrea Ford, Tala Barton and Mara Krupinski finished third with a qualifying time of 53.24 seconds.

Ford also qualified in the 200 dash (2nd, 28.07) and Tylor Ross finished third in the 3,200 run, but qualified with a time of 10:13.34. He also qualified in the 1,600 run (3rd, 4:36.69)

Onaway’s Jaclyn Nash also qualified for the finals after finishing third in the discus (100-9).

BASEBALL

Wildcats split doubleheader at Pinconning

PINCONNING — The bats were on fire this weekend for the Alpena baseball team as they collected 34 hits over two games, but unfortunately split a weekend doubleheader with Pinconning.

The Wildcats lost a tough game one by a score of 13-11.

Alpena scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game, but unfortunately couldn’t hold off Pinconning as they scored two runs to take the first game.

Bruz Copping started the game and was relieved by Logan Guthrie who took the loss on the mound and he was eventually relieved by Ben Budnik.

Pinconning scored a run each inning and the Wildcats couldn’t slow their opponents bats down.

Offensively, Alpena was led by Josh Lucas who was a perfect 4-for-4. Chandler Lantz had three hits and both Lars MacArthur and Chris Derocher had two hits apiece.

Alpena was able to outscore Pinconning in the nightcap and used the longball to win 19-9 in six innings.

Derocher, Copping and Bailey Marquardt all hit a home run in the game. Lucas collected five hits, Marquardt had four and both Derocher and Lantz had three.

Budnik started the game going the first three innings before being relieved by MacArthur who pitched 1 2/3 inning and got the win before being relieved by Cam DeCaire.

Alpena improves to 16-10 overall on the year and will travel to Traverse City Central for a huge Big North Conference doubleheader against the rival Trojans.

Alpena JV team goes 2-2 in home tournament

The Alpena JV baseball team got its annual home tournament started off with a 15-1 win over Sault Ste. Marie, but dropped its next two games, losing 7-6 in a wild extra inning game against Cheboygan and then suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Rogers City before ending the day with a 15-6 win over Saginaw Heritage.

Riley Arlt picked up the win in game on as he allowed just one hit and struck out five.

Offensively, Colby Plowman and Colin Donajkowski went 2-for-3. Owen Limback was 2-for-2 and Jack Schmanski was 2-for-4.

In the second game, both Alpena and Cheboygan were in a scoreless tie after four innings and the Chiefs took a three run lead in the fifth, but Alpena responded with four runs of their own to take the lead in the home half of the fifth, but were unable to hold onto the lead as the game went to extra innings where an international tie break rule went into affect for what would be the final two innings as Cheboygan outlasted the Wildcats by one run.

Arlt, Drew Booth and Alex Cosbitt each had two hits in the game.

Alpena suffered another stinging defeat as they lost another one run game, this time falling to the Hurons 4-3. The Wildcats had a 2-1 lead in the fifth, but eventually coughed up the lead and the game as they were held to just four hits.

Alpena finished the day on a positive note beating Saginaw Heritage 15-6.

Plowman went a perfect 4-for-4 in the game and Limback was 2-for-2.

The Wildcats are 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the Big North Conference and the team will wrap up its season on Tuesday when they host Traverse City Central.

Alcona splits tournament games at Tawas

TAWAS — The Alcona baseball team split two weekend games at a tournament in Tawas over the weekend.

The Tigers dropped their first game of the day 12-3 to Ogemaw-Heights as they gave up six runs in the sixth inning as the Falcons broke the game open.

Alcona couldn’t get much going offensively, but would rebound in the second game as they knocked off the host Tawas 12-1.

Jake Gallagher picked up the win allowing just two hits and striking out four.

At the plate, Alcona was led by Matt Krisan and Alex Stephenson who each went a perfect 3-for-3. Luke Loyer and Brock Franklin both went 2-for-3 and Franklin blasted a home run in the win.

The Tigers will be back in action today when they travel to Atlanta for a doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

Alpena JV softball team goes 2-0 at Chip Hills tournament

CHIPPEWA HILLS — The Alpena JV softball team continued its domination on opposing teams in a weekend tournament at Chippewa Hills.

The Wildcats opened with a 16-0 win over Pine River in game one.

Lilly Lewis and Kali Spomer combined to allow just two hits and truck out three.

Offensivley, Spomer had two hits and Rachel McDonald went a perfect 3-for-3.

Alpena continued its solid play in the second game as they blew out the host Chippewa Hills by a score of 13-1.

Lewis went the distance and allowed just two hits and strick out five.

Rachel Suszek went 3-for-4 and Ursula Duncan was 2-for-4 in the win.

Alpena improves to 28-3 overall on the season and will look to hit the 30 win mark on Tuesday when they finish the regular season at home against Traverse City Central.

Hurons drop first game of the year

GLEN LAKE — The Rogers City Softball team suffered some tough breaks in dropping its first game of the season in a tournament at Glen Lake over the weekend.

The Hurons fell by a score of 5-2 in their first game of the day against Kingsley.

Jayna Hance suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and she struck out four.

Offensively, Hance and Kayla Rabuea led the Hurons with two hits. Saige Wagner, Kyrsten Altman, Taylor Fleming and Hannah Dittmar each had a hit as Rogers City outhit Kingsley, but stranded baserunners nearly every inning and couldn’t come up when they big hit when they needed.

The Hurons took out the furstration of losing its first game on the host Maple City Glen Lake, winning by a score of 18-0.

Altman picked up the win, striking out five batters.

The Hurons played long ball three times as Rabeau, Hannah Fleming and Jazmyn Saile each homered in the game. Hance had three hits includinga triple and RBI. Rabeau and Hanna Fleming added three RBI to go with their home runs. Altman and Amanda Wirgau had two RBI and Taylor Fleming doubled in the game.

Rogers City holds a 23-1 overall record and will be back in action today when they host Mio.

GOLF

Alpena golf team continues improvement

Despite another tough day on the course, the Alpena golft team took third in a tournament that featured all Big North Conference teams along with Ogemaw.

Zach Ross and Evan LeTourneau put together great days.

Ross was the medalist and shot the lowest score with an 81 and LeTourneau came in fourth with a score of 84. Sean Steven shot a 94 and Alec Paulsell shot a 95 for the other two counting scores.

The team scores were 20-60 strokes higher because of the windy conditions compared to the last time the team competed.
