Alpena JV softball team wins home tournament

Winning has been contagious for the Alpena JV softball team as they dominated the competition during the teams annual home tournament on Saturday.

The Wildcats went a perfect 3-0 to capture the title, beating Cheboygan 16-0, Ogemaw-Heights 28-3 and Rogers City 21-5.

“It was just fun to watch. We hit the ball so well and everyone chipped in. We run 13 deep and it’s nice to be complemented by other teams on how talented we are,” Alpena coach Amy Timm said. “We kept hitting all day and it’s always nice to come out strong at a home tournament.”

Alpena took care of Cheboyan in the opening game, needing just four innings to defeat the Chiefs.

Kali Spomer earned the win on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Offensively, Rachel McDonald, Kortney Dunn and Jaime Modrzynski each doubled in the game. Natalie Jaskolski went 3-for-4 and Aubree Sheldon was 2-for-3.

The Wildcats defeated Ogemaw in just three innings in a game tow victory.

Lilly Lewis picked up the win allowing just one hit, walked four and fanned three.

Spomer led the offense going 2-for-4 in the win.

Alpena again made quick work in the championship game, knocking off Rogers City as the bats remained hot.

Lewis and Spomer combined to strike out three Hurons, while allowing just two hits and one walk.

At the plate, McDonald led the way going a perfect 4-for-4.

The Wildcats improve to 20-03 overall on the year and will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Gaylord.

Onaway falls in championship game

Alpena varsity softball competes Michigan Stars tournament

GRAND BLANC — The Alpena varsity softball team competed in the annual two-day Michigan Stars showcase tournament over the weekend. A total of 48 teams were at the tournament that was held at Clarkston High School.

The Wildcats went 4-2 over the weekend.

Alpena started the tournament off with a 5-4 win over Grand Blanc 5-4 and a win over Milford 10-2 before losing in the final game Saturday to Henry Ford 8-1.

The Wildcats earned a spot in the winners bracket on Sunday along with seven other teams.

Alpena fell to Clarkston 9-2 before finishing the weekend on a positive note with a 3-0 win over Waterford-Kettering.

“This was a good learning experience for us. We played some strong teams and I think that it helped us grow as individuals and as a team to play good games against very strong competition. It really forced us to step up our game,” Alpena coach Paul Marwede said. “The tournament allowed our kids to get some exposure and we did a nice job. I received several compliments about how nice our program is and it’s great to hear us mentioned with other top teams in the state.”

BIRCH RUN — The Onaway softball team went 1-1 during a tournament at Birch Run on Saturday.

The Cardinals beat Royal Oak in game one by a score of 4-1, but later fell in the title game, losing to host Birch Run 16-3.

Kennedy Crawford twirled a gem on the mound in game one as she pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on two hits, walked three and retired 11 batters.

Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Calley Selke who went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Kayla Metty was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Crawford was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Jordan Larson and Daria Domke each went 1-for-3.

Onaway fell in the championship game as Selke and Crawford combined to allow 15 earned runs on 11 hits while walking six and striking out four.

At the plate, Metty went 1-for-3, Taylor Ehrke was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Britney Buczkowski was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Larson went 3-for-3, Lauren Welklin went 1-for-3 and Maddie McLean walked twice and scored two runs.

The Cardinals hold a 16-3 overall record and will have a quick turnaround as they will be back in action today when they travel to Central Lake.

BASEBALL

Alcona baseball team wins Joburg tournament

JOHANNESBURG — The Alcona baseball team earned two big victories en route to capturing a championship at a tournament in Johannesburg-Lewiston on Saturday.

Alcona knocked off Hillman in game one, winning by a score of 12-7.

Brock Franklin went 2-for-2, Jake McFadden was 3-for-4 and Matt Krisan went 2-for-3.

On the mound, Jake Gallagher picked up the win after being relieved by Franklin who pitched the final two innings.

The Tigers then went on to beat Mancelona in the championship game by a score of 8-0.

Alex Stephenson tossed a complete game to pick up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out two.

At the plate, Krisan and McFadden each went 2-for-3.

Alcona improved to 11-3 overall and will be back in action today when they host Rogers City in a North Star League doubleheader.

Hillman splits games at Joburg tournament

JOHANNESBURG — The Hillman baseball team lost its first game of the Joburg tournament on Saturday, falling to Alcona.

Caine Hunt took the loss pitching two and a third innings allowing six runs, two earned on two hits, while walking four and striking out two.

At the plate, Hunt went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Funk was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI and Kyler Moir went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

The Tigers topped host Joburg in their second game.

Nash Steinke and Cam Koenig combined to pitch three innings apiece and struck out three while allowing six runs on five hits and walked seven.

Offensively, Hunt went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Funk was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Koenig went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.

Hillman is 14-4 overall on the season.
