Young nets hat trick, Storch reaches milestone in Wildcats win
OSCODA–The Alpena High girls soccer team got its 2017 season off to a winning start and earned a milestone win for its coach on Monday.
Anna Young netted a hat trick, Kourtney Jones and Kennedy Kaiser each scored twice and the Wildcats topped Oscoda 8-0 at Oscoda High School.
The win gives Alpena coach Tim Storch his 1,000 career victory as a soccer coach.
“It’s a good first win for us,” Storch said. “As I said last week, I have expectations that will be better for this year and I think the first game showed some of that.”
Emma Kelly added a goal for Alpena and goaltender Maren Winter earned the shutout.
Alpena plays at Ogemaw Heights on Thursday at 4 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Alpena JV sweeps Bay City John Glenn
BAY CITY–The Alpena JV softball team got the season off to a dominating start on Monday, defeating Bay City John Glenn 12-0 and 10-0 in five innings.
In the opener, Lilly Lewis earned the win, striking out nine and walking two while allowing just one hit.
At the plate, Natalie Jaskolski had a pair of doubles and Ursula Duncan had a double.
In the second game, Kali Spomer earned the win for Alpena, striking out one and walking none.
Megan Roznowski had a triple and Kortney Dunn and Dayna LaBell each had a single.
“All the girls played really well. It was a great game to get started with,” Alpena coach Amy Timm said.
Alpena (2-0) hosts Boyne City on Thursday.
