Lumberjacks drop conference opener

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — The Alpena Community College softball team dropped its first conference game of the season on Friday against Oakland Community College.

The Lumberjacks fell in the first game of a doubleheader by a score of 10-2 and had the nightcap called after three innings due to weather.

Alpena trailed just 3-2 after four innings, when a costly outfield error hurt the Lumberjacks as two runs scored on an error and the next batter for Oakland hit a two run home run to open up a four run lead as the momentum shifted.

“We were playing well up until the fifth inning when we had a costly error and it just changed the game completely,” ACC coach Shelley Hance said.

Ashley Meyers took the mound and went the distance as she suffered the loss striking out five batters.

Meyers also went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lumberjacks.

Jenna Hincka went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Alexa Quaine, Taylor Whittman and Monica Bartz each collected a hit in the losing effort.

The Lumberjacks were behind 4-1 after three innings before the game was called. Kayla Lenard led off with a double and scored Alpena’s only run to that point.

The two teams will likely resume the game when Oakland comes to Alpena later in the season for a doubleheader.

The Lumberjacks will be off the rest of the weekend as their four games against Henry Ford have all been postponed due to weather and field conditions.
