ACC falls to Pioneers

UNIVERSITY CENTER–The early-game hitting woes that plagued the Alpena Community College softball team last weekend, reared their head again on Tuesday as the Lumberjacks lost to Delta in a pair of makeup games.

Alpena lost 8-0 and 14-6.

In the opener, Kendra Cole took the loss for ACC (1-18, 1-10 MCCAA) and Alpena had trouble making contact at the plate in the shutout.

“We had trouble hitting early and we’re just got to be fierce,” ACC coach Shelly Hance said.

ACC fell behind 7-0 after one inning in the second game before attempting to rally back. In the third inning, Kelsey Huffman had a bases-clearing triple. The Lumberjacks added three runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 10-6, but the Pioneers added four more runs in the next three innings.

“When you start off behind, you really have to right back,” Hance said. “I really like the fight we had (later), but it’s got to happen a lot earlier.”

Ashley Meyers started for ACC on the mound and Kayla Lenard led ACC at the plate, going 4-for-4. Alexa Quaine was 2-for-4.

ACC will play home games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, ACC will resume a suspended game with Oakland at 1 p.m. The game was suspended in March after two innings and Oakland will start the game with a 4-1 lead in the third inning.

Following that, ACC will play a scheduled doubleheader with Macomb with games at 3 and 5 p.m.

All games this weekend will be played at the Huron Shores Complex on US 23 North.
