Onaway falls in rematch with Pickford; Posen tops Atlanta

ONAWAY–The Onaway boys basketball team got off to a great start on Monday, but couldn’t keep it going it in the second half and lost to Pickford 72-51.

In a rematch of a Class D regional game from last year, Onaway (5-7) led 18-12 after one quarter, but fell behind from there.

“It seemed like we got away (from moving the ball). We did a poor job of moving the ball and went away from moving it inside,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “We weren’t aggressive offensively and we got beat every way you could get beat.”

Onaway trailed 30-29 at halftime and 48-42 after three quarters, but Pickford pulled away from there, outscoring Onaway 24-9 over the final eight minutes.

Keaton Brewer led Onaway with 21 points and Cody Cruse added 12.

Derrick Edington paced Pickford with 20 points.

Onaway hosts Forest Area on Wednesday.

GIRLS

BASKETBALL

Posen 77, Atlanta 11

ATLANTA–Cami LaTulip scored 18 points, Brooke Ciarkowski added 15 and the Posen girls basketball team earned a 77-11 win over Atlanta on Monday.

Posen (6-9) started the game on a 22-5 run and led 48-5 at halftime.

Riley Krajniak added 12 points for the Vikings.

“Everybody scored and it was nice to get everybody in,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said.

Tiffany Juergens led Atlanta (1-17) with seven points.

Posen plays Tawas on Wednesday.

Alcona 50,

Rogers City 49

LINCOLN–Three Alcona players reached double figures and the Tigers defeated Rogers City 50-49 on Monday in a North Star League contest.

Taylor Livingston led Alcona with 19 points, Brittany Decker added 14 and Kendra LaFave chipped in with 10.

Alcona led at halftime, but the Hurons rallied and took the lead with a minute and a half to play. The Tigers were able to hit some key shots and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter,

Just a great high school basketball game,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “Very proud of how we fought back after giving up the lead. We were able to get some points from the outside tonight, which makes our posts more effective.”

Taylor Fleming led Rogers City with 12 points. 

Hillman 56, Mio 25

MIO — The Hillman girls basketball team won its 14th game in a row on Monday as they defeated Mio by a final score of 56-25.

The Tigers jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Vanessa Schook led Hillman with 20 points and Lyndsey Ryba added 12 points.

The Thunderbolts were led by Lindsey Kuffel who scored 10 points in the losing effort.

Hillman improves to 14-1 overall on the season and is a perfect 12-0 in North Star League play.

The Tigers will look to continue both streaks on Thursday when they host Alcona.

BOWLING

Alcona tops Oscoda

The Alcona girls bowling team traveled to Hi Skore Lanes in West Branch to take on the Oscoda Owls on Saturday. The Tigers split the Baker games, but came out on top with a total of 249 to the Owls 235. In the Team event the Owls swept both games with a total of 1370 to the Tigers 1330, with Oscoda winning by a final score of 20-10. High games for the Tigers was Raegen Eller with 175 and the high for the Owls was Cassidy Cleary with 170.

The Lady Tigers will be hosting on Saturday at Village Lanes in Harrisville, with the boys to follow.
