Flyers fall just short in high scoring game against Motor City

The Alpena Flyers ended a busy three game weekend with a 8-7 loss against the Motor City Hawks on Sunday.

In what was a high scoring affair, the Flyers wasted no time putting the puck in the net as they score 36 seconds into the game on a goal from Rhett Limback on assists from Nic Baranyai and Dean Schmanski.

Less than two minutes later, Baranyai fired a beautiful wrist shot from just inside the blue line that found the back of the net to put Alpena up two goals early.

The lead would be short lived as Motor City scored three consecutive goals to end the period and take a 3-2 lead into the second.

The Flyers tied the game midway through the period on a power play goal from Limback.

Again, the Hawks had an answer and responded with two goals to take a 5-3 lead late in the second period.

Conner Allen helped the Flyers come within a goal scoring with 2:04 left in the period.

Motor City gained momentum early in the third period scoring a goal less than two minutes in and later taking advantage of a power play goal to go up 7-4 with 13 minutes to play.

Limback found the back of the net for a third time to record a hat trick and bring the Flyers back to within two exactly one minute later.

The Hawks answered with what was their final goal of the game to regain a three goal lead with under eight minutes to play.

Three goals just wasn’t enough for Limback, who scored his fourth goal of the game less than a minute later as Alpena cut the lead back to two.

With a man advantage in the final two minutes of the game, Jacob Hamp scored a goal with 12 second left to bring the Flyers to within one goal, but it was a little too late as Alpena fell in a tough high scoring contest to wrap up its weekend.

Alpena was able to defeat the Hawks in the first of their two games, defeating Motor City 7-1 on Saturday.

The Flyers fell on Friday as they went up against the Midwest division leading Traverse City North Stars, losing by a score of 9-3.

Traverse City was in total control early on in the game and scored five first period goals to open up a big lead early after just one period.

The Flyers got on the board just over three minutes into the second period when Limback scored a short handed goal off an assists by Schmanski.

Traverse City answered back and regained its five goal lead as Derek Becker took advantage of a power play opportunity and lit the lamp.

Alpena captain Baranyai found the back of the net two minutes later on an assist from Brandon Ciupka, but again the North Stars answered right back on another power play goal, this time off the stick of Parker Hebden.

Traverse City was done exchanging goal and ended the second period on a dominant note, scoring two more unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead after two periods and put the game out of reach.

The final goal of the game came just over four minutes into the third period when Ciupka scored on assists from Hamp and Andrew Thiem.

It was a big victory for the North Stars and an even sweeter victory for Traverse City goaltender Danial Lofstrom who was between the pipes and got a win against his former team as he stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced.

The North Stars peppered Alpena goalie Trevor McConnell with 33 shots on goal.

With the loss, Alpena has its five game winning streak come to an end and falls to 18-13 on the year. the Flyers will have a pair of games against Motor City starting today and finishing the series tomorrow.

Alpena currently holds a 19-13 overall record and is tied for third place in the Midwest division with Motor City and Ironwood at 40 points apiece.

The Flyers will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Tri City for two games against the Icehawks.
