Alpena’s Roznowski a finalist for MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award

On Friday, 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2016-2017 school year were announced.

Of the 120 finalists across all classes, Alpena High School senior Trevor Roznowski was selected among 23 other Class A boys as a finalist.

“It’s a great honor to represent the Alpena community as a finalist for the MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award. Growing up in a place like Alpena has been a great blessing. We have a special school and community members that contribute to a culture of excellence,” Roznowski said. “I’ve had so many influential coaches, teammates and mentors that have helped me become both the athlete and person I am today and for that I am thankful.”

Roznowski is a three-sport athlete at Alpena, competing in football, basketball and track and field. He was a captain of the football team during the fall and is one of the captains on the basketball team.

“Trevor is a great student-athlete. He works hard and is committed to excellence in everything that he does,” Alpena football coach Aaron Sims said.

The program has recognized student athletes since the 1989-90 school year and will again honor 32 students from MHSAA member schools who compete in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament.

In order to be eligible for the award, Roznowski needed a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and to have received a varsity letter in one of the sponsored sports.

“We are extremely proud of Trevor and his achievements both athletically and academically,” Alpena Athletic Director Tim Storch said. “He represents everything that scholar-athlete should be and it is no surprise to us that he is one of the finalists for this award.”

Roznowski was also asked to respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

If Roznowski is selected as one of the Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, he will be a part of a ceremony that will take place during halftime of the Class C Boys Basketball Final on March 25, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing and will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

“I’ve learned lessons from athletics that I couldn’t have found anywhere else. I couldn’t do anything that I do without the great group of people I have around me in my family, friends and teachers,” Roznowski said. “I’ve always pushed myself to put my full effort into each day. giving anything less than your best only takes away from what you can accomplish. It’s humbling to be recognized for the time I’ve invested in making myself a better athlete, student and person.”
