Alpena Flyers finish with 3-1 record at junior hockey showcase

WEST DUNDEE, IL — The Alpena Flyers completed a four day junior hockey showcase on Wednesday. Alpena went 3-1 and ended with a 8-2 victory over the West Sound Warriors on Wednesday morning at Leafs Ice Centre.

The Flyers came out firing early on Wednesday as Finley O’Shea scored two goals to open the game. The first goal came just 23 seconds into the first period as O’Shea scored on an assist from Hunter Tolsdorf. O’Shea then scored an unassisted goal eight minutes later.

Tolsdorf added a goal of his own midway through the period to extend Alpena’s lead to three.

Just over 20 seconds later, the Flyers added their fourth goal as Dean Schmanski lit the lamp on an assist from Nic Baranyai.

The Warriors were able to get on the board as Donald Cribbs scored with under five minutes to go as Alpena carried a three goal lead after one period.

During the showcase, the teams played two 30 minute periods and the Flyers came out in the final period just as hot as they did to start as they scored three unanswered goals within a seven minute stretch halfway through the second and final period.

Rhett Limback scored just over 10 minutes in on a power play goal. Limback was assisted by Baranyai and Schmanski on the goal.

Six minutes later, Limback found the back of the net again on an assist from Mike Thompson to give the Flyers a 6-1 lead.

Alpena was not done and neither was O’Shea as he netted his third goal of the game to pick up the hat trick less than a minute after the Flyers took their five goal lead. Limback and Conner Allen assisted on O’Shea’s third goal.

Alpena scored its final goal of the game as Baranyai lit the lamp. The Warriors got a goal late by Brennon Newton, but the team was no match for the Flyers in this one as Alpena peppered Warriors goaltender Chris Shoul with 50 shots in the convincing win.

The Flyers lit up the scoreboard on Tuesday as well in a 10-2 shellacking of the Seattle Ravens.

Alpena used seven first period goals to open up a huge lead and coast to a big win. Schmanski and Damen McCall led the way scoring three goals each.

Tolsdorf, O’Shea, Andrew Thiem and Noah Vandusen each scored a goal in the big win.

Alpena played in a much closer game on Monday as they edged out the Islanders Hockey Club 2-1 in overtime..

The Islanders opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first period on a goal from Ian Leslie.

Alpena answered back eight minutes later when Vandusen scored on assists from Thompson and Jensen Saddler.

The teams were unable to score at all in the second period and they headed to overtime.

The overtime period didn’t take long as Limback scored just 25 seconds into overtime on assist from Baranyai to lift the Flyers to another victory.

Alpena lost its first and only game of the showcase on Sunday 5-2 to the Eugene Generals.

The Generals opened up a three goal lead early in the second period, but Alpena responded with two unanswered goals of its own as O’Shea scored an unassisted goal and Allen scored a power play goal on assists from Thompson and Limback.

The Flyers were unable to complete the comeback as the Generals scored the final two goals of the game to skate away with the win.

After losing its first game of the showcase, Alpena responded winning three in a row to put an exclamation point on what was a successful road trip.

The Flyers are 17-13 overall and will have some time off before returning to action on January 13, where they will host the Tri City Icehawks in a weekend series at Northern Lights Arena.
