Alpena Jets

The 7th grade Alpena Jets began their season Wednesday afternoon with a win over the Petoskey Northmen 12-0. The offense scored on the first offensive play of the game on a 65 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Voltz to Cooper Bright. The Jets’ next score came on a five yard run from Bryce LaFave behind some great blocking by Max Seacrest, Ashton Mill, Christian Wickland, Ande Young, Logan Momrik, Hunter Liske, and Luke Young.

The Jets’ defense came out strong and maintained that strength for the entire game holding Petoskey scoreless. Alpena forced four turnovers including two interceptions; one each from LaFave and Ashton Perrin, as well as two fumbles recovered by Perrin and Jacob Thomas. The defense was led by Thomas with seven tackles, Liske with six, while Wickland and Reggie Rambus each had five. All players contributed to the Jets’ win. The Jets next game will be Wednesday at Traverse City West.

Petoskey’s big plays too much for 8th grade Jets

The Alpena Jets eighth-grade team lost its season opener to Petoskey Wednesday at Thunder Bay Junior High, 34-20.

The Northmen came up with two big running plays in the third quarter and converted on every two-point conversion in the contest.

Head coach Bob Troy said he saw some good things out of the boys.

“It was not too bad for the first time out against a solid Petoskey team,” he said.

The first half was a battle between the two squads. Following a scoreless first quarter, Alpena struck first on a 32-yard touchdown run from Charlie Williams. A good kick out block by tackle Gage Kaszubowski gave Charlie lots of running room. Williams took in the conversion as well for an 8-0 advantage with 3:20 remaining.

Petoskey got its offense going with a pass play deep into the Jets’ end, which set up a five-yard touchdown run. When the conversion pass was caught, the score was tied at eight.

Alpena was driving in the last minute of the second quarter, but could get no further than the Petoskey 19 when time ran out.

The Northmen got the ball first in the second half and scored on their third offensive play. It was the first of three long runs in the second half. This one went 60 yards.

Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to the Petoskey 33, but the offense fumbled the ball away, which led to a 55-yard touchdown run. In a matter of minutes, the Northmen had jumped ahead and led 24-8.

In the fourth quarter, Tony Kirka broke free for a 44-yard run to the Petoskey five and got a chance to punch it in from five yards out. The conversion failed at the 6:15 mark.

The Northmen countered with another long run of 55 yards to pay dirt.

Williams provided the last offensive highlight of the evening with a 71-yard touchdown run. The Jets’ Nic Schaub recovered a fumble in the closing minutes, but there was not enough time to overcome the 12-point deficit.

Kirk (165 yards) and Williams (163) combined for 328 rushing yards.

The defensive stats for the Jets were: Williams 9 tackles, 2assists; Schaub 4 tackles, 2 assists, fumble recovery; Gary Dean 3.5 tackles, 1 assist; Kirka 3 tackles, two assists; Kaszubowski 3 tackles; Tristan Minton 2.5 tackles, 1 assist; Ben Adamiak 1.5, one assist; Allen Reynolds 1.5 tackles, 1 assist; Remus Rushton 1 tackle, 2 assists; Dan Savage 1 tackle; Ryan Wieczorkowski .5 tackle, 1 assist; Luke Jakey .5 tackle, 1 assist.
