Alpena High boys XC team takes third at Lancer Invite in Midland

The Alpena High cross country team competed at the Lancer Invitational on Saturday September 10. The team came out with a mission to simply beat their times from the week prior. Thirty three runners did just that and four topped that with career best times as well.

Career best times were run by Aden Smith, Josh Smith, Garret McHarg and Dallin Toth.

There were over 200 runners in each of the Division 1/2 races and the Alpena boys team had three in the top five.

Mitchell Day topped the field with a first-place finish of 15:25. Aden Smith took third place (16:06) and Josh Smith was fifth (16:23).

The pack was finished off with Isaac Cross and Dallin Toth scoring well enough for Alpena to place third overall to bring home its second trophy of the season.

The Alpena girls team has yet to run a race with the whole team together, but coach Joy Bullis said the team is awesome at filling in for each other.

Maddy Boyd opened her season with a 21:08, finishing 22nd. The team was filled out with Alayna Nugent, Kaylee Rondeau, Molly Dickenson and Malley McQuire.

“Both teams have some challenging weeks coming up and lots of work to do,” Bullis said. “The potential and the determination is there. I am expecting great things.”

Alpena will race next at the Michigan State University Invitational on Friday.
