Alpena finishes second in home golf invitational

The Alpena girls golf team took second behind defending state champion Traverse City West in the Alpena Invitational at River’s Edge Golf Club on Tuesday.

Led by Senior Lizzy Heath, who placed fourth overall with a career best 85, the Wildcats carded a team score of 386.

Junior Maddie Parr (95) and Sophomore Brynna Smith (112) also achieved career best scores for Alpena.

Annika Dy of Traverse City West earned low medalists with a 76. Courtney Nunneley joined Heath earning top ten medalist honors. Harbor Springs came in third by one stroke with a 403.

The Wildcats scored their best total score in recent memory.

In addition, the Alpena JV team earned third place led by Faith Pausits (top five JV medalist) along with Meghan Cosbitt and Mikayla Williams. West also took the top spot in the JV competition followed by Traverse City Central.

“We decided at the beginning of the season that we weren’t going to try and compete with TC West. They are 80 to 100 strokes better than every team in the North and are the defending state champs. Our big goal this year was to beat every other team at a tournament and we achieved that goal,” Alpena coach Mike Nunneley said. “When you consider that a year ago, Lizzy and Brynna had never competed in a golf tournament of any kind -it’s amazing where we are as a team today. As a result of this tournament, we have to redefine our goals for the rest of the year. If we play to our full potential we have an opportunity make some noise at Regionals in October.”

The Wildcats return to action next week in Harbor Springs.
