Local players earn all-state softball honors

Sarah Meredith, Jenna Hincka and Kayla Lenard ended their high school softball careers on a high note.

The three of them were among several players to earn all-state honors for the 2016 season from the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association.

Hincka, Posen’s starting shortstop, batted .563 as a senior with four home runs and 58 RBI. She finished her career with 180 RBI and 12 home runs while scoring nearly 200 runs in five seasons. Hincka also earned first team all-state honors last season.

Lenard also earned first team all-state honors for the second consecutive year. She earned the honor this season as an outfielder and was honored at second base as a junior. Lenard was a four-year varisty player for Posen and finished her senior season with 45 RBI and a .455 batting average.

Meredith, Rogers City’s starting catcher, garnered first team all-state honors for the fourth straight season and finished up one of the best careers in school history. In four years for the Hurons, she was part of four district title teams, three regional title teams and a state champion in 2014 where she was the starting catcher.

Meredith had two hits in Rogers City’s quarterfinal loss to Indian River Inland Lakes and drove in two runs. Her home run in the sixth inning pulled the Hurons to within one run before an eventual 8-7 loss. She finished her career with 245 RBI, 38 home runs and a .570 batting average and will head to Ferris State University in the fall to continue her softball career.

While three local players made first team all-state, many more earned honorable mentions. In Division 1, Alpena had three players earn honorable mentions: pitcher Lauren Heath, first baseman Jessica Marwede and utility player Mykayla Price. The three of them helped the Wildcats to another Big North Conference title this season and led Alpena to the district finals.

In Division 4, Hillman pitcher Vanessa Schook, Onaway pitcher Calley Selke, Rogers City pitcher Jayna Hance and Rogers City infielder Hannah Fleming all earned honorable mentions.

Fleming, a sophomore third baseman batted .397 with eight home runs and 41 RBI. Her two-run shot provided with the Hurons with just enough offense to top Mio in the regional final. Hance was a star for the Hurons on the mound and finished the year with a 20-9 record and 108 strikeouts.

Inland Lakes pitcher Cloe Mallory, who led the Bulldogs past the Hurons and Mio utility player Cassidy DeFlorio also earned first team all-state honors.

On the baseball diamond, three local players earned second team all-state honors from the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association: Posen senior pitcher Travis Sharpe, Rogers City senior pitcher Quintin Kelly and Alcona junior catcher Brock Franklin.
