Hillman loses key NSL twinbill vs. Cardinals

WHITTEMORE-In a battle of two of the North Star League’s top teams, Whittemore-Prescott came out on top against Hillman on Thursday, winning 6-4 and 7-3.

In the opener, Kyler Moir took the loss for Hillman, allowing six runs on nine hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

At the plate, Dylan Steinke was 3-for-4 for Hillman (21-9-1) with a double and an RBI; Bubba Banks was 2-for-3 with an RBI; Trenton Hopp was 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI and Andrew Funk was 2-for-3.

In the second game, Jared Juergens took the loss for the Tigers, allowing seven runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Banks was 1-for-2 with a walk; Funk was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and Caine Hunt was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

GOLF

Wildcats finish 10th in districts

TRAVERSE CITY-The Alpena boys golf team competed in a Division 1 district on Thursday and finished 10th out of 12 teams.

Alpena finished with a team score of 385 and Midland won the district with a team score of 310.

Evan LeTourneau led Alpena with a 94 and Zach Ross and AJ Nowak both carded 95s. Tommy Hein shot a 101 and Alec Paulsell shot 103.

Tigers sweep

Whittemore-Prescott in regular season finale

WHITTEMORE – The Hillman softball team ended its regular season on a high note, sweeping a doubleheader against Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday.

The Tigers shut out Whittemore in game one by a final of 5-0. Vanessa Schook was dominant on the mound and earned the victory, tossing a complete game, two-hitter as she struck out 15 batters.

Schook also was locked in at the plate collecting two hits and an RBI. Brooke Jones had a hit and an RBI. Alison Samp had two hits and both Kalen Tchorzynski and Jozie Appelgren each had one hit apiece.

Hillman won the nightcap by a score of 9-6. Morgan Dove started the game and picked up the win, pitching into the fifth inning and struck out three batters before being relieved by Tchorzynski who finished the game fanning four batters.

The Tigers were led by Morgan Armon who had three hits, including a triple and an RBI. Eve LaFleche and Tchorzynski each had two hits and an RBI. Jones collected two hits and Samp and Schook each had a hit apiece.

Hillman finishes the regular season with an overall record of 26-8 and 14-3 in North Star League play.

The Tigers will host Atlanta on Tuesday in pre-districts.
