Alpena golf team finishes in middle of the pack at Ogemaw

OGEMAW – The Alpena boy’s golf team finished 13th of 24 teams on Friday at the golf course in Ogemaw. As a team, they had a combined score of 374, which was their average of last year.

Tommy Hein and Ben Dault led the team with 92 strokes each, with Aaron Nowak not far behind at 94 strokes. Zack Ross and Evan LeTourneu both had 96 strokes, and Gavin Wesley had 113.

“The kids were a little frustrated with their results, but I think we’ll do much better tomorrow in West Branch,” golf coach Eric Mitchell said.

The Alpena golf team will look to build off of there solid first day when they tee off again today at the West Branch Country Club.

CHEBOYGAN – The Alpena U-14 travel soccer team played two games last weekend against Cheboygan and Sault Ontario. 20 minutes into game one, Kennedy Kaiser crossed the ball into Sarah Campbell who tapped the ball to Anna Young who eventually found the back of the net for a goal.

Alpena dominated the first half and led by one at the half.

Cheboygan tied the game 20 minutes into the second half with a direct kick from about 20 yards out. With two minutes left, Kaiser scored the game winner. Lauren Gapske and Elly Clarke shared the win as the goalkeepers as Alpena won 2-1.

In game two, Alpena and Sault played to a 1-1 tie. 10 minutes into the game, Alexis Jones scored on a terrific cross from kaiser.

Alpena controlled most of the first half, but the Civics tied the score on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the first half.

The second was evenly matched as the game ended in a tie due to some solid goalkeeping from Alpena’s Macy Dickinson.
