Alpena Wrestling has another strong showing

Alpena wrestling has had another successful week on the mat. On Jan 23, the Alpena girls traveled to the Durand Invitational where Haley Stenz (125), Tryst Bukowiecki (135), and Madelyn Farley (155) each went undefeated on the day on their way to three first- place finishes.
On Saturday, a limited boys line up brought home three medals at the Northern Michigan Championships in Gaylord. Hudson Derry (175) had three wins for the day on his way to a third-place place finish. Westin Mitchell (190) also picked up three wins for a fifth- place finish. Eli Werth (138) fought his way through a tough bracket for a seven- place finish.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats hosted Atlanta for a dual matchup honoring senior wrestlers Marleigh Hann (130), Cayden Smith (150/157), and Owen Zitlau (175) for the last home match of their high school careers. Alpena topped Atlanta by a score of Alpena 54 – Atlanta 22. Winning their matchups on the night were Ethan Kowalski (113), Haley Stenz (126), Tryst Bukowiecki (138), Matthew Kowalski (144), Cayden Smith (157), Brody Oliver (165), Hudson Derry (190), Westin Mitchell (215), and John Dargis (285)
The girl wrestlers will be back in action on Saturday at the Midland Chemic Clash Girls Invitational while the boys will enjoy a well deserved weekend off of competition to gear up for BNC conference finals and MHSAA tournament.
