Alpena boys swim team post another strong finish

OGEMAW — The Alpena boys swim team continues to grow as a team and set individual records.

On Saturday, the Alpena varsity boys’swim team traveled to Ogemaw for the Stephanie Rice Invitational and competed against eight other teams.

The team’s second-place finish highlighted the current strength of the program and the athletes’ ability to compete together as a unit.

Coach Jennifer Johnson said it was nice to see the contributions from her swimmers across individual races and relays.

“The team competed fearlessly, supported their teammates, and stayed locked in from start to finish,” she said in an email.

For the second year in a row, sophomore captain Joshua Short shared The Swimmer of the Meet award while earning two individual first place finishes. He won the 200- yard freestyle and 500- yard freestyle, and shared second place in the medley relay and first in the 200 free relay with a personal best record.

Senior captain Drew McConnell had personal bests in his individual events. He excelled in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breast stroke, a shared second in the medley Relay and first in the 200 free relay with a personal record.

Senior Alex Winfield individually took second place in his 50-yard freestyle, first in the 100 yard butterfly, and a shared second in the medley relay. He also placed first in the 200 free relay, also with a personal record.

Freshman Ethan Budd shared second in the medley relay and first in the 200 free relay. Individually he posted his personal best time in the 100-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard medley relay and 400- yard freestyle relay, Remi Gagnon, Nicholas Dargis, Logan Mill and Brenden Werth posted a personal best score In the 200- yard freestyle relay, Otto Dahleen, Quentin Hubert, Joel Kaiser and Milo Dahleen also posted personal records.

Individually, Quentin Hubert has a personal best in the 200-yard individual medley and the100-yard backstroke.

Zack Cloft also improved his fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle and Remi Gagnon in the 100-yard backstroke.

The next meet will be against Standish Sterling and John Glenn on Jan. 20, on the road.
