ALPENA — The Alpena Wildcats boys soccer team battled through a tense and physical contest on Wednesday night, defeating the Ogemaw Heights Falcons 1-0 in a gritty matchup.

With just 2:26 left in the first half, junior Jackson Birmingham broke the deadlock, calmly burying a penalty kick into the back of the net. That goal would prove to be the decisive moment of the match as both teams leaned heavily on their defensive lines throughout the evening.

The Falcons pressed hard, but Alpena’s backline stood strong, turning away repeated attacks and clearing out chances. The Wildcats also showed composure under pressure, keeping their shape and preventing Ogemaw from finding an equalizer.

Tensions rose late in the game as a yellow card was issued to Alpena with just 47 seconds left on the clock. Despite the late challenge, the Wildcats held firm until the final whistle, securing a hard-fought victory.

The defensive struggle highlighted the determination of both teams, with neither giving much ground. Alpena’s resilience ultimately gave them the edge, improving their momentum as they prepare for their next matchup.
