ALPENA — The Alpena Wildcats varsity volleyball team hosted a quad tournament on Thursday, competing against Harbor Springs, Boyne City, and Cheboygan. The Wildcats finished the day with one win and two losses.
In their opening match, Alpena defeated Harbor Springs in straight sets, 25-10 and 25-9. The Wildcats controlled the pace from the start, making accurate calls on the court and limiting Harbor Springs’ scoring opportunities.
The second match against Boyne City was tightly contested. Alpena dropped the first set 24-26 after Boyne City gained a late lead. The Wildcats stayed close in the second set but were unable to close the gap, falling 20-25.
In the final match, Alpena lost to Cheboygan in two sets, 17-25 and 21-25.
Several players contributed key performances throughout the tournament. Senior Kaila Girard recorded consistent serves, while junior Emily VanHorn, senior Laura Poli, and junior Ashlyn Gray each made diving plays that extended rallies and provided defensive support.
Alpena will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Traverse City Central for a 6:30 p.m. match.
