DETROIT (AP) — Garrett Cooper hit his first major league home run in the sixth inning, and that was the start of an impressive comeback by the Miami Marlins, who rallied for their fifth straight victory, 6-3 over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

The Tigers led 3-0 before Cooper’s solo shot. The Marlins then scored three runs in the seventh, and Brian Anderson added a two-run homer in the eighth.

Detroit has dropped eight in a row — and Sunday’s game was suspended with the Tigers trailing Oakland in the seventh inning.

Detroit starter Daniel Norris was solid, but with the Tigers up 3-1, he gave up a single to Harold Ramirez to start the seventh. Buck Farmer (2-3) relieved him and allowed a single to Martin Prado. Then Neil Walker hit a two-run double to tie it.

One out later, Miguel Rojas put Miami ahead to stay with an RBI single. Anderson made it a three-run game with his home run in the eighth.

JosÈ UreÒa (2-6) allowed two earned runs in six innings for the Marlins. Austin Brice pitched a scoreless seventh, retiring Miguel Cabrera on a weak grounder with men on first and third for the final out. Tayron Guerrero handled the eighth, and Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

Detroit scored a run in each of the first three innings. Niko Goodrum hit an RBI single, Gordon Beckham drove in a run with a groundout, and Christin Stewart added a run-scoring double.

PREGAME ANTICS

Detroit left-hander Daniel Stumpf and Miami righty Sandy Alcantara had a playful standoff before the game, standing several feet in front of their respective dugouts and not budging. With the game about to start, an umpire eventually went over and got Alcantara to vacate his spot, and Stumpf did so, as well.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Marlins: Something appeared to be bothering Romo on the mound during the game’s final batter. Manager Don Mattingly went out to check on him, but Romo remained in the game.

Tigers: Matthew Boyd (4-4) takes the mound for Detroit. Boyd has a 3.41 ERA and an impressive 1.01 WHIP on the season.

Yankees 7, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE– Gleyber Torres hit two of New York’s five home runs off Baltimore’s beleaguered pitching staff, and the New York Yankees survived a shaky outing from CC Sabathia in a 7-5 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night.

Torres homered leading off the third and fifth innings to help New York take a 7-2 lead. He has four multihomer games this season — all against Baltimore — and has gone deep against the Orioles 10 times in 11 games.

Gary Sanchez hit his ninth homer against the Orioles this season, and DJ LeMahieu and Thairo Estrada also connected. New York has 33 home runs against Baltimore, leads the series 9-2 and is 6-0 at Camden Yards.

The Yankees will seek to complete a four-game sweep Wednesday afternoon. New York is already assured its sixth straight series win.

Baltimore has lost five in a row to sink to 15-34, the worst record in the majors.

Sabathia (3-1) allowed five runs and six hits, including two home runs, in five innings. Although his ERA climbed from 2.97 to 3.48, the lefty took advantage of New York’s ample offensive display to win at Camden Yards for the first time in seven starts since June 2016.

Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

The Yankees took charge in the second inning when Estrada and LeMahieu hit two-run homers off Dan Straily (1-4), who gave up two more long balls before being pulled after four ineffective innings.
