County board acted with integrity on library

Dear editor, In defense of the Alpena County Commissioners: After my husband and I attended recent commissioners meetings, I was very impressed that each had reviewed the books in question at the library and had even attended the library’s July meeting. These men and women are sincerely concerned that Alpena has a library. By removing the present board, who seemed not to have made any progress in addressing the concerns of the citizens for the past two years, the commissioners can hope that the new library board will deal with the challenge and keep our library open for our ...

Voting is transparent thanks to citizens’ work

I voted! “We the People can vote,” unlike many in this world. I voted during the nine-day early voting period in February and then this past week in the August primary. Our county doesn’t have anywhere near the mass of voters as in other counties, who desperately need the additional time for young people who work one or two jobs or even the elderly or handicapped or transportation-challenged citizens. Our secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, and many partisan elected leaders worked hard to give us all the opportunity to cast our votes easily, safely, and with confidence that the ...

I pay taxes to benefit public’s general welfare

To the Republican Party, P.O. Box 3, Alpena, Michigan, 49707: The other day I received a postcard from you disguised as a voting bulletin. This postcard urged me to vote yes on tax changes. As I read, it made me think, “Will equal property taxes really benefit the general welfare?” I am one in the lowest tax bracket and I don’t think so. As a private citizen and property owner I have a vote and a voice and a responsibility to pay my taxes. I do that this week with the general welfare in mind, to benefit others and myself with so many worthy projects. It makes me angry when ...

Glad for great care I received at our hospital

MyMichigan staff, I am grateful for you! As I incoherently stumbled into the doors of our local ER, the highly trained and quick-thinking staff immediately knew and reacted to my situation. Even though I had self-administered, it wasn’t enough to counteract my illness. Once the treatment began, and approximately 15 minutes but probably less as I don’t recall, of the quickest and fastest response from the physician and roughly five nurses to get the appropriate medications, EKG, and chest X-ray and for the next six hours, it was a waiting game but with 100% assurance I would ...
