Read the Constitution regularly, respect rule of law

Dear Editor, The question posed as a headline for a letter to the editor reads, “What does the United States stand for?” The answer is in our Constitution. The Constitution does not provide for the separation of church and state as the writer claims. Get on board for alternatives to toxic fireworks

Dear Editor, It is that time when I see requests for donations toward funding Fourth of July fireworks. Recently, I learned something most disturbing, which would best be shared. The beautiful colors in our fireworks are created using forever toxic chemicals, which remain in the water and soil forever! These cannot be treated by our City Water Treatment Plant, which can only remove E. coli bacteria. What does U-M know that ACC, APS do not?

In Alpena County, both ACC and APS are both very large employers, and we count on them to follow the rules of government. Elections have consequences, and by a large margin, President Trump and the MAGA movement elected conservative people who believe in the rule of law. This includes the APS school board. Right now Republican leaders in Congress are debating a package that would provide $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to large corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg – and they plan to pay for it by cutting essential tools families and businesses need to thrive like health care, public education, nutrition assistance, and child care.
