On Wednesday, Sept. 23, I attended the League of Women Voters candidating event, where the candidates running for seats on the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education and Alpena County residents had the opportunity to meet in a non-confrontational and informal session.
Attendees were seated at five tables (the original plan was for eight tables), but three of the eight candidates did not appear. Lindsey Klein, Vincent Thomas and Robert Bruning apparently did not provide a reason for their absence. The candidates were allowed 15 minutes at each table where they answered as many questions as they could in the time allotted.
Sarah Fritz is running for re-election and was very impressive. She was prepared, honest in her answers and very professional in demeanor.
Three other candidates are running for the school board for the first time. Claire Kipfmiller, Evan Carlson and Kayla Ratz may be new, but they are dedicated. It was refreshing to see and hear three young people so passionate, willing to listen and learn, and willing to serve the APS students and staff.
AJ MacArthur, who is running for re-election, also attended the event.
All in all, I felt it was a wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with the five candidates. Thanks to the LWV for providing this experience.
