Medicaid cuts may impact area children
As a former consultant and educator of high-needs infants, I can attest to the importance of reminding families of PL 94-142, or IDEA (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 1975). In short, this act ensures that all children, regardless of ability, have the right to a free and appropriate public education. This legislation grew from the era of de-institutionalization. Moving children and adults with special needs from government-run institutions into their communities meant that families had to bear the high cost of daily life, medical care, and education.
PL 94-142 also brought forth the ability of individuals and families to qualify for Social Security and Medicaid to support their care. Medicaid is not a “benefit” as many politicians will espouse. Medicaid is an “insurance” bought and paid for by the American taxpayers. Medicaid is a lifeline for those families who have to travel from rural Michigan to the closest urban hospital that has specialists to treat rare diseases and disabilities. Examples of medical specialists might include pediatric neurologists and ophthalmologists. Think of the baby who needs a feeding tube, has microcephaly, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, etc.
This week, the richest men in the world have voted to make cuts to Medicaid. We have yet to see how this will impact Northeast Michigan, sick children, and our local hospital. But considering that the pro-life political party wants to limit care for babies is astounding. If you are hearing that Republicans are trying to take away your rights and life-lines, believe what you are hearing.
If Medicaid and SSI are cut, feel empathy for the innocents who do no harm. Feel empathy for those who did not vote for this. But most importantly, exercise your right to vote. And vote accordingly.
