Voting is transparent thanks to citizens’ work

I voted! “We the People can vote,” unlike many in this world. I voted during the nine-day early voting period in February and then this past week in the August primary. Our county doesn’t have anywhere near the mass of voters as in other counties, who desperately need the additional time for young people who work one or two jobs or even the elderly or handicapped or transportation-challenged citizens.

Our secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, and many partisan elected leaders worked hard to give us all the opportunity to cast our votes easily, safely, and with confidence that the outcome, no matter who you vote for, will be counted and confirmed. The safeguards start with public viewing of the public accuracy tests of the tabulators/machines at each voting location to the balanced bipartisan election inspectors, poll challengers, and poll watchers. Then each county has a board of canvassers, again a balanced, bipartisan group, who verify that all procedures are legal and transparent.

The citizens who do all this work for us are truly dedicated to the rule of the law, and do so with pride in doing that job well. I met the election inspectors from Millen Township this year, and found them professional, efficient, and able to find solutions if they didn’t know a particular procedure. Not to mention amiable, and they made the effort to show respect to me, the voter. I am proud of them, of all those who choose to make democracy work for all of “We the People.”
