Safety, security measures have been implemented

This letter is to inform the Community of Hillman about some safety and security measures that have been implemented. The safety and security of our staff, students, and stakeholders is top priority for our school and with these new improvements, we believe that we are on our way to achieving this goal.

Mid-year in 2022, the Michigan legislature passed PA 93, which was signed into law by Governor Whitmer. Section 97c provided for State funding for each K-12 school building to be assessed by a third-party vendor. Hillman went with ACAP SOLUTIONS as the vendor for this process. The ACAP process was developed from decades of experience and focused study on school safety. They use a multi-disciplinary team with expertise across the spectrum of Comprehensive School Safety Planning which provides a broad view of the safety of each school.

We have put many changes in place for this school year and our staff and students have been working really hard toward these goals. Our safety committee meets monthly with the Montmorency County Emergency Management Coordinator to keep updated on all information passed down from the State level. The school’s doors at the High School will be locked and secured at 3:10 p.m. There will be no entry through the front door after school hours, which will require sporting event spectators to park in the west parking lot and enter through the athletic entrance doors (far two doors on the right hand side next to the gym).

Thank you for supporting your school, staff, and students as we make the necessary updates in our Emergency Operations Plan to keep Hillman a place where students are safe to choose their own path for success.
