It’s bicycling season!

Let’s all drive alertly and be on the lookout for bicycles and motorcycles.

Remember, Michigan law protects bicycles by granting them the same rights and responsibilities as cars and trucks on all Michigan roads except limited access highways (like I-75).

Bicycles are required to ride with traffic (not against it) and to keep to the right of the lane. Most bicyclists try to stay to the right of the fog line if it’s big enough, or even a paved shoulder, but we have a legal right to the actual lane.

Normally vehicles can go around us when the roads aren’t busy. But when they’re busy, pinch points can occur. This occurs when a car is coming toward you and one behind you and all three of you, cars and bicycle, will reach the same point at the same time. A vehicle wouldn’t pass into oncoming traffic normally, but a lot of drivers think they can squeeze through next to a bike. The bike usually loses and the rider can be very seriously injured or killed.

Slowing down won’t make you late, and it will save lives and prevent lawsuits. Drivers are also required to give bicycles no less than three feet of clearance when passing.

Bicyclists… remember, you have all the responsibilities of any other lawful vehicle. You must ride with traffic and obey traffic laws.

I recommend mirrors for bikes. I like to know what’s behind me and if the driver is a good driver or not. If they aren’t good drivers and don’t know the law, I want to know so I can take defensive action.

So let’s all enjoy the coming months of good weather and enjoy the beauty of Michigan together on the roads, and obey the law.
