For many reasons, vote no on Proposal 3

Why do I not like the “abortion” amendment, known as Proposal 3, Prop 3, or it appears on the election ballot, Proposal 22-3? Let me count the ways.

At first glance, Prop 3 appears innocuous, giving a pregnant woman a right to make “all decisions about pregnancy.” But does this include using illegal drugs and alcohol while pregnant or engaging other reckless activities? It seems it could, since that, too, would be a new right.

Secondly, every new right creates new responsibilities on part of society. Rights need to be enforced. For example, everyone has a right to an attorney, paid for by taxpayers, if in a criminal case, they cannot afford one. Essentially, under Prop 3, the State of Michigan will be getting in the abortion business. It is no surprise that Planned Parenthood is the main supporter of this amendment. If passed, in some cases, Michigan taxpayers will likely be responsible to pay for the right to “abortion on demand.” The term “serial abortions” comes to mind.

Thirdly, once made part of the Michigan State Constitution, there is no going back. If Prop 3 is passed, “abortion on demand” will become the “law of the land,” part of our state’s DNA. There would be few chances anymore to change the law. Would taxpayer funded “serial abortions” become a new thing? Will parental rights regarding a pregnant teen’s decisions become a thing of the past?

For these reasons and more, I urge everyone to vote a resounding no on Prop 3.
