Do your research, read proposals, and vote

We are writing to encourage all voters to do their research, read the proposals, and vote! Read the actual proposal language and make your decision accordingly. Here is some basic information on the proposals:

Proposal 1 is a Constitutional amendment that deals with both term limits and financial disclosures in the legislature. This proposal would allow for 12 total years of service, which can be completed entirely in the House, entirely in the Senate, or a combination of both. Additionally, the proposal would create financial disclosure requirements for state legislators, with the goal of preventing conflicts of interest. Currently, Michigan rates 50th in the nation for transparency in elections.

Proposal 2, Promote the Vote 2022, will ensure that voters can vote free from intimidation by enshrining the fundamental right to vote in the Michigan Constitution. It would provide state funding for secure ballot drop boxes, postage for absentee ballots and absentee ballot tracking, as well as assuring that overseas ballots (which members of the military overseas use) will be counted if they are postmarked by election day. It will require that election audits be conducted in public by local election officials and will ensure the Michigan elections are determined solely by the votes cast. It does not change the current voter ID law, which asks for ID but allows an affidavit (signed under penalty of perjury) if a voter does not have an ID.

Proposal 3, Reproductive Freedom for All, will enshrine reproductive freedom in the Michigan Constitution and guarantee every individual the right to make their own decisions about pregnancy and reproductive healthcare, including abortion and birth control. It also allows the state to regulate abortion after fetal viability, but not prohibit if medically needed to protect a patient’s life or health.

The League of Women Voters of Michigan supports all three proposals.
