Get a table

Yes, one of the first things I make sure I have at a decluttering and organizing job is a table, usually a card table. But it can be the kitchen or dining room table if either is nearby as well as a cleared off counter. If one is not available, I bring one. Why is a table so important? It is much more comfortable to do sorting when you are either standing or sitting at a table.

You need to dump or set out a box, closet, shelf or cupboard of stuff onto the table. Now you can see what you have and can more easily determine what you want to do. What you want, you can immediately put back in the now empty designated area. What you don't want can either be tossed, put in a donation box, or put somewhere else in the house.

Using the floor as a sorting area makes for a much shorter session as it is difficult to move everything around. The table is a basic thing to use, but not everyone thinks of it. Even when you are sorting through your garage, cover the table and put all of the smaller, sometimes dirty tools and small objects on the table to make it easier to sort. Here's my pep talk to, yes, clean out your garage to get your vehicle in before the snow flies. Is all of your stuff in the garage worth more than your vehicle?

Another good reason to use a table and chair is so the sorter stays on task. Decisions are easier to make when there are fewer distractions-just one table, one dumped out box (or area), one small area at a time.

So, grab a table (and maybe a chair especially if you are working with someone) and get to work in those spaces that need cleaning out.
