Casting a ballot is more than just a civic duty; it is a powerful tool that allows us to shape our community, our state, and our nation. Every single election is important. Presidential elections are exciting and get a lot of press. However, local elections shape your world as much as, or more than national elections. You should vote - every single election, big or small.
Okay, it is important for all U.S. citizens to vote. We can all agree on that. There are several ways to vote and it may seem confusing. There are two main things you need to do: 1) Check your voter registration status and 2) Make a voting plan.
Check your voter status: First, search mi.gov/vote if you have access to the internet. This site will tell you EVERYTHING. Click on "Your voter information" to make sure you are registered, where your polling place is, your clerk's contact information, and even a preview of the ballot. If you are not registered to vote - register. You can register online or go to your local clerk's office to register in person. While you are there, pick up a "Pocket Guide for Michigan Voters." It gives you all the information you need.
Make a voting plan: Do you want to vote by mail, vote early in-person, or vote on election day? Let's break down each so you can decide what works for you.
- How do I vote by mail? Any registered voter may vote by mail in Michigan. First apply for an absentee ballot online at mi.gov/vote or visit your clerk's office to apply in person. You will then receive an absentee ballot. Complete the ballot as instructed and return it by mail, to the ballot drop box outside your clerk's office, or to your clerk's office. Completed ballots are due by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
- How do I vote early? Every Michigan community offers 9-days of early, in-person voting. Alpena County combines the city and townships early voting at the Alpena Township Office 4385 US 23 North, Alpena, Michigan 49707. You can avoid lines on election day by voting early. You complete your ballot and feed it through the tabulator – just like Election Day.
- How do I vote on Election Day? All registered Michigan voters may vote in person on Election Day. Polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and you have the right to vote if you are in line by 8 p.m. To double check your polling place, visit mi.gov/vote and click on "Your voter information."
That's it. Easy as apple pie. Mark your calendars with these dates to vote:
- Mon., Oct. 19 - Last day to register to vote by mail or online at mi.gov/vote
- Oct. 20-Nov. 3, 2026: New voter registrations are required in person for November election
- Sat., Oct. 24 - Sun., Nov. 1: Constitutionally-mandated early voting period
- Tues., Nov. 3 @ 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. - Election Day
My suggestion: If you work or will be out of town on Election Day, vote absentee or early in person. If you enjoy the buzz of Election Day, then vote on November 3rd 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Just make sure to VOTE.

You may use nonpartisan voter guides like Vote411.org. Read candidate or ballot initiative webpages. Attend local town halls or meet-and-greets to hear directly from candidates. This is your community, your state, and your country. You have the right to vote. VOTE! Just do it.
