Summer is over, the kids are back in school and will be in class nearly every Monday through Friday except for a few days at Thanksgiving until their Holiday break over Christmas and New Years, totaling about 75 days until 2027.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives in Washington took off the entire month of August, returned to DC and were in session four days in September and have now taken another recess until after the election and won't return until November 9th.
Folks, that means the House has to be at work only only four days from July 31 till November 9th. Pretty nice gig if you can get it.
Speaker Mike Johnson said the House members need to go home and campaign because "the House has done it's work". Yes, I laughed out loud when I heard him say that! Johnson said they need to go home to tell the voters about all the work they had done this year.
What he should have said, if he would actually tell the truth, is, that campaigning to get reelected is more important than staying at their post doing the country's work. But wait a minute, Johnson said the "House had done it's work". Well, let's see.
The single most important job Congress has is to fund our government by passing next year's budget by September 30 each year, which they haven't done and will not get done and have not done since 1997, 30 years ago. There are 12 appropriation bills that need passed by September 30 and the House has passed only three. That is not "doing their work."
They have not passed funding for the Departments of Justice, Defense, Energy, Financial Services, Homeland Security, Interior and Environment, Labor and Health and Human Services, and Transportation and Housing. Speaker Mike Johnson may call that getting their work done. I disagree.
Gallop just released a poll showing Americans give Congress only a 10 percent approval rating, about the lowest in history. Of the 435 Representatives 375 of them are asking us to reelect them, so they must stop working for us and come home and tell us how great they are and that we should vote for them again.
Think about that for a minute. Okay, times is up. I didn't need the full minute do figure out Congress has lost its way, is wandering around Capitol filled with political landmines, living in fear the people may figure it out that it's time to elect new folks who work as hard as we do, or at least as hard as my seven year-old grandson, who will soon grow out of recess time which is something Congress has never grown out of.
Instead of calling for another 45-day recess, Speaker Johnson should have put all the Reps in the corner and not let them go home until ALL their homework was completed. Or at least sent them home with their failing report card to have the voters sign, like our parents had to do when we were in school. Since Congress acts like children, we should treat them like children.
Now if that news isn't bad enough, with only a 10 percent Congressional approval rating, do you know what will actually do? We will reelect over 90 percent of them, like we always do.
Not me, not this year. I will, as you will, suffer through the next month and a half watching these Representatives plow through our districts spreading fertilizer hoping to harvest us like garden vegetables on election day, November 3, 2026.
They will flood us with grandiose BS about what they have done, not mentioning what they didn't get done. They will make promises they know they can't keep and not remind of us the ones they made two
years ago that were never realized. We can fight back. We can say, "I don't believe you anymore, and it's time for a change."
If we do reelect 90 percent of them, and we will, it's safe to say nothing will change and we will go through this again in two years. So please, use this year's vote to fix the broken Congress they won't fix.
