What do you do when you have skeins of unused yarn? What do you do when your friends give you their yarn they no longer want? Or what if you just want to do something nice for others? Let me tell you about Donna Lawson, Liz and Dyana Guznan. I got a phone call from a gentleman living in Florida. He was planning a camping trip to Atlanta, Michigan and he brought with him 200 winter hats of all different colors and designs.
His neighbor, Donna, used to live in Alpena and knitted these hats with her two friends. Since she once lived in Alpena, she wanted them to come north where there is actual winter. When her neighbor said he'd take them for her, she was thrilled.
Where do you find a place that would take 200 hats? Her neighbor called St. Anne's Catholic Church who gave them the phone number for Children's Closet of which I am the volunteer director. He was so very relieved when I told him I would take all of the hats and disperse them around the area.
My first plan is to give them away at our Children's Closet winter giveaway in October. I also plan to give some to the Salvation Army coat drive. If others know a need for them, please let me know. I think there are plenty to go around. Noone in this area should be without a winter hat.
People often defer to me when they have too much of something, knowing I will try to find the best place for it. "One man's junk is another man's treasure" so the saying goes. When organizing and decluttering there is a time to save and a time to give.
These women are truly giving from their hearts and we, in northern Michigan, are blessed with their labor of love.
