Finding my true colors

Colors are a part of us before we enter the Earth.

Gender reveals tag us "pink" or "blue," and an army of colored clothes, toys and puzzles come our way.

At some point, we adopt a "favorite" color, or at least make one up to answer one of small talk's silliest questions.

What is my favorite color?

I've been thinking of this while rifling through the closest during one of our family's summer projects -- organizing our clothes.

Not that I'm a fashionista, but I suppose it matters on the season.

You see, many people say green looks good on me, because it matches my eyes. This worked really well when I was in school, as my high school's colors were green and white.

Yep, green is my color.

But, wait.

I've always been a University of Michigan fan, much to the chagrin of the battalion of Buckeyes around here. My childhood wardrobe consisted of a lot of "Go Blue."

And...as a Little League infielder, I fell in love with the Tigers' double play combination of Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker. It forged a lifelong love of Tigers' baseball.

The Tigers' primary color -- blue.

This worked well with my other Michigan love, the Detroit Lions. Not quite the same shade, the Lions' Honolulu blue stands out, and has always taken real estate in my closet.

The Pistons, my favorite basketball team, also have blue as their primary color.

OK, blue is my favorite color.

Alas, I went away to college and went to a school, Central Michigan, whose color scheme was Maroon and Gold. These colors instantly became amongst my favorites when choosing what to wear.

Let's get weird -- Maroon and Gold are my favorite colors.

Then, Betsy got a job teaching and we had kids who started school.

Back to blue.

Then we moved to Ohio -- more blue schools for Betsy and the girls.

Like the Eiffel 65 earworm song: "I'm blue (da ba dee da ba)."

But not always.

Isabelle played on a soccer team with red and black as primary colors. Juliet's dance studio works black, blue and purple into its merchandise. Isabelle's summer lacrosse team even had a color scheme I could only describe as "safari."

These are a lot of colors to root for. This doesn't even consider all of the various "alternative" uniforms that often boast wild color schemes.

Even the local schools feature different colors for nights supporting causes -- light blue for mental health, pink for breast cancer, etc.

Tangent time: This would be a lot less of a worry had my parents settled in Western Pennsylvania where they grew up. Pittsburgh is the only city in the country whose professional sports teams all adopt the same color palate -- Black and Gold in this case.

But then what would I have to write about this week?

So, as we head into this upcoming sports season, I'll be looking out for unique and fun color combinations. Colors are just part of what makes sports great -- unified fans, nifty uniforms and flags that add to the spectacle of a halftime show.

"Jeremy, what's your favorite color?"

Call me color blind if you want, but it depends.

Go Blue. Go Green. Go Maroon and Gold. Go Pink. Go Purple. Go Black.

Just not "Go Scarlet and Gray."

Never say never.

I do have a couple of daughters getting closer and closer to college themselves...
