The Michigan primary election is over. I hope you took the time to vote, either in person or by mail. Voting is more than just a right or privilege, it's a responsibility granted to us by our Founders who intended for, “We the People of the United States" to govern ourselves. The way we do that is by voting.
The big story out of Michigan was progressive Abdul El-Sayed winning the Democrat nomination for U.S. Senate over a more traditional Democrat, Haley Stevens. It may be disturbing to many because although El-Sayed is not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), he is practically joined at hip with them. El-Sayed was endorsed by Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders and the entire Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez congressional socialist mob. El-Sayed has spoken at several DSA events and was the headliner at one of their major fundraising events.
If you are not yet aware of the DSA, you need to be. With a membership over 120,000 and growing, and with early success at the ballot boxes, we need to all understand their intentions. Their goal is to fundamentally restructure the United States of America, beginning with rewriting the Constitution and replace Capitalism with Socialism.
The DSA has been at this for years, but with the mood of the country being fed up with how the two parties are governing, they know an opportunity to pounce when they see it. The two parties are hemorrhaging members with 10,000 voters a week switching to Independent. The DSA is not a party. They run under the Democrat label and are flipping the traditional Democrat party upside down.
So what exactly does the DSA want to change? Rewrite the Constitution and dismantle federal institutions, by abolishing the U.S. Senate entirely. Do away with the current structure of the President and Supreme Court by making them answer to Congress, and open voting rights to anyone living in America even though many are not citizens of this country.
They want to abolish ICE and do away with borders. They want to place major corporations, financial institutions and essential industries under government ownership, have Medicare for all, make colleges free and cancel all student debt, build government owned housing, defund and demilitarize the police and work toward abolishing the police and prisons, and stop deporting illegal immigrants and grant amnesty to all immigrants. They want to defund the Pentagon and close U.S. military bases abroad and more rapidly move to renewable energy.
Does some of this worry you? You think it can't happen? Well, the DSA is in it for the long haul and it is already beginning. In 2025 there are over 250 DSA members in office, from local state and federal positions. They have endorsed hundreds of candidates and claim 31 DSA ballot initiatives already passed.
Now we know America is not perfect, but the Constitution has served us pretty well over these first 250 years. It guarantees freedom and liberty, rights to own property and the freedom to prosper. It has checks and balances that are intended to provide us with three equal branches of government that provide leadership, legislation and justice.
And our economic system of capitalism has enabled Americans to improve their lives and provide for their families. Yes, there have been times of prosperity and times of struggle, but over time capitalism has proven far superior than Socialism or Communism.
Right now, many Americans are experiencing difficult times, and a huge majority of all Americans are losing trust with our institutions ranging from government, to education to the economy. The two parties are unresponsive, focused instead on winning elections and gaining or regaining partisan power.
The result is we are looking for change. We have tried changing the balance of power from one party to the next, and it is not working. We get the same stalemates, the same growing debt, the same ignorance to solve major issues like healthcare, Social Security, debt, housing, immigration, tax reform, election reform, etc.
So in walks the DSA saying we can cure all that if we make government larger, more powerful, and offer a lot of free stuff. Their message is resonation with young people as they are finding it more difficult to get ahead these days, and that is sad. Sad because they don't see the opportunities other generations had.
And it is scary too. Do we want to live in a country where everything answers to Congress, who hasn't passed a simple budget on time in 25 years. A country with no police or prisons, a country with no borders, a weak military and government owned businesses? I hope not.
But unless Washington DC doesn't wake up and smell the Socialism, we are headed down a path most Americans can't comprehend, myself included.
