Banding together for hope: Alpena rallies around one of Its own
Trending
Some battles are fought quietly.
They are fought in hospital rooms, during long drives to appointments, in sleepless nights, and in moments when families choose hope over fear.
Today, one of those battles belongs to Mark Nowak, a proud 1978 graduate of Alpena High School, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and lifelong member of the Alpena community. Mark has been diagnosed with advanced Pancoast lung cancer that has spread to his lymphatic system, along with a brain tumor. His diagnosis is terminal, but his determination has inspired everyone around him.
Those who know Mark describe him as resilient, humble, and always willing to lend a hand. Throughout his life, he has quietly supported friends, family, neighbors, and his community. Now, it is Alpena's turn to stand beside him.
On Sept. 12, the community will gather for Band Together to Fight Cancer, a benefit concert at the Alpena Antique Tractor & Steam Engine Club. The evening will feature one of northern Michigan's favorite classic rock bands, Jedi Mind Trip, performing hits from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Guests can also enjoy food, a silent auction, and an evening dedicated to hope, friendship, and community.
But this event is about much more than music.
It is about reminding one family that they are not walking this road alone.
Cancer has touched nearly every family in our community. It doesn't care about age, occupation, or background. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 2 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year, and millions more family members will become caregivers, advocates, and sources of strength for someone they love.
Mark's journey has become a reminder that while cancer can change a diagnosis, it cannot define a person's spirit.
His courage has inspired friends, classmates, former coworkers, and neighbors to come together with a simple message:
No one fights alone.
Every ticket purchased, every silent auction donation, every sponsor, and every person who walks through the doors sends a powerful message--not only to Mark and his family, but to every person in Northeast Michigan currently facing cancer.
The benefit is also an opportunity to celebrate life.
Guests will hear great music, reconnect with old friends, make new memories, and show that Alpena is the kind of community that shows up when it matters most.
As Mark continues treatments and faces each day with courage, he reminds all of us that strength is often found in ordinary people who refuse to give up.
On Sept.12, the spotlight won't simply shine on a stage.
It will shine on a community.
A community choosing compassion over fear.
Hope over despair.
And love over cancer.
