Welcome aboard, Abbi Kaszubowski
Alpena Township has a new chief executive, and we welcome her and wish her well.
New Supervisor Abbi Kaszubowski, who was sworn in Wednesday, and her Board of Trustees have a long list of things that need doing, and we hope they find success and find success quickly.
Among the to-do list:
∫ End the decade-old court battle between Alpena and Alpena Township over how much the township should pay the city for water and sewer services. That’ll be Kaszubowski’s first order of business, with a court appearance scheduled for today.
∫ Find a sustainable solution for the Alpena Township Fire Department, which has struggled with staffing and which members of the township board have said they would like to stop funding with general fund dollars. Township voters twice rejected a proposed property tax hike that would have fully funded the Fire Department. Kaszubowski can’t get involved in that particular item because her husband works for the township Fire Department, creating a conflict of interest.
∫ Manage booming commercial growth in the township, making sure the infrastructure is keeping up with the growth.
Getting all of that done is no small task, but we agree with now-former supervisor Nathan Skibbe’s assertion in a recent News story that he and the board had set the township up for continued success. The township budget is sound, it has a healthy cash savings account, and economic development is happening.
We urge Kaszubowski to hit the ground running and get right to work. The township and the residents who sent Kaszubowski to the office expect and deserve nothing less.
