Find better ways to cope

A new study from the University of Michigan links bipolar disorder to premature deaths often associated with the negative ways those with the disorder try to cope with their condition.

Some 70% of those with bipolar disorder smoke, for example, compared to 20% of the world population, News staff writer Mike Gonzalez reported recently. Smoking can cause a host of health problems, from heart problems to lung cancer.

The research also found that people with bipolar disorder were more likely than those without bipolar disorder to have asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, and other ailments.

We understand.

The manic and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder can be traumatizing and difficult to deal with. To cope, many people turn to self-medication such as drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.

But there are better ways to cope, and you can find help right here in Northeast Michigan.

The Northeastern Alano Club at 3100 Piper Road, for example, holds at least two meetings called Over the Bridge every day — usually one in the morning and another in the evening — to talk about issues in a support group.

Anita Tanner, a local psychotherapist with a private practice, also suggested those with the disorder turn to family, friends, those struggling with the same problems, or any supportive organization for help dealing with the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Regular exercise and good sleep also have been shown to improve symptoms.

Those struggling with mental illness also can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

We know how difficult it can be, but there are better ways to cope than unhealthy habits.

We urge anyone struggling to turn to the right kind of help.
