The Salvation Army does many important things in our community, from providing clothing and food to those in need to helping people connect with other community resources for everything from housing to utility assistance.
Now, the Salvation Army needs your help, dear readers, with something they do that is little known to the community at large but well known to those who count on the Salvation Army in times of crisis: the emergency service canteen.
When an emergency such as a house fire happens, the Salvation Army pulls up in a mobile kitchen to serve food and drinks to emergency first responders and to the survivors of the crisis.
For years, Joyce and Joseph Demski have run Alpena's canteen mostly by themselves.
Now, the couple wants to step away, and the Salvation Army needs at least two and hopefully many more volunteers to step up to replace them.
If no volunteers step up, the canteen could end operations in Northeast Michigan.
The hours are irregular (you never know when an emergency might happen), but the service is invaluable and the work rewarding. The Salvation Army will provide training.
So we call on all Northeast Michiganders to search their hearts and their schedules and step up if they're able. Our police and firefighters and neighbors need you.
