Swami saw something in the early morning this week that he has never seen. The All-Knowing-One could see a silhouette when approaching a stop sign. Come to find out it was four deer standing in front of a stop sign in a line. They proceeded to walk across the road. He found that very unusual because deer have been known to do the opposite; run in front of you or your vehicle and never make the first move.
Some teams are hoping for some type of move to gain entrance to the postseason. Let's see if Swami makes those predictions come true, this week.
SAULT STE. MARIE (4-2) at ALPENA (1-5) -- Friday -- 7 p.m. -- The Wildcats are looking for something they can turn into a win to end this five-game losing streak. Swami knew Gaylord was going to be tough, being ranked and having a perfect record against excellent competition. It has been an all too familiar scene for the Wildcats; missing assignments, penalties and turnovers.
Sault Ste. Marie is no stranger in scoring points, accumulating 160, while the defense has only allowed 56 over six games. The Blue Devils came out strong against Glen Lake with an interception by Callen Campbell in the opening minutes going for a pick six. The game only got uglier from that point for Glen Lake, as the next two possessions found Campbell finding wide open receivers for touchdowns and the rout was on.
With that said, Swami has a hard time believing that it will be a happy outcome on this homecoming night. There is too much stacked against the Wildcats.
Swami Sez: Sault Ste. Marie 42, Alpena 14.
ALCONA (5-1) at AU GRES (5-1) -- Friday -- 7 p.m. -- Alcona versus Au Gres should be the game of the night, perhaps the game of the year. The game pits an excellent passing game by Alcona, against a strong running game of Au Gres. Swami is expecting a high scoring affair since both teams can put points on the board in a matter of seconds.
The Tigers made it look easy last week in a runaway win over Onaway. The Cardinals were looking to take another step towards the postseason, but receiver Collin Walker dashed those hopes with three receiving touchdowns. Jeremiah Bullis and William Lieber also were on the receiving end as well. Quarterback Garrett Somers also had time to rush for two touchdowns.
Au Gres likewise had a runaway game against Mio. Cole Pendred high-stepped into the end zone to swing the game in the Wolverines favor early. Quarterback Carter Zeien was also involved in first quarter action. Tyler Zaherniak and Cole Dewald also used the rush to score.
Swami says this will be a game of the ages, all statistics have both dead even. It may just come down to the home field advantage.
Swami Sez: Au Gres 48, Alcona 42.
ROGERS CITY (3-3) at MIO (1-5) -- Friday -- 7 p.m. -- Rogers City measured Whittemore-Prescott in the second half, working itself to a come-from-behind win on homecoming night. Isaac Paull and Aaron Fenstermaker led the second half charge to put the Hurons in front for good after trailing by eight. The Hurons defense sealed the deal with the Cardinals driving midway through the fourth quarter. After a rocky start to the season, the Hurons still have a chance at the postseason by winning out.
Meanwhile, Mio is just playing out the string following another blowout. Swami says they have not given up totally on themselves as they were able to score against the stingiest defenses in Au Gres. The problem is the Thunderbolts have not been able to string together drives that would produce enough points to gain them wins. Instead, Mio has suffered through one of its worst seasons since the school's existence.
Swami Sez: Rogers City 32, Mio 12.
HILLMAN (1-5) at ATLANTA (2-4) -- Friday -- 7 p.m. -- Atlanta is trying to get to .500, while Hillman is trying for its first victory on the field. The Tigers did receive a forfeit from Hale, who could not field a team. The Huskies are hoping to carry over their win against Charlton Heston. Quarterback Jace Cheedie was the offensive leader, throwing three touchdown passes, then adding two rushing touchdowns. Cheedie finished 14 of 22 attempts for 188 yards. The Huskies lead back on this night was Brett Culham with 143 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, Cohen Armock was instrumental with nine tackles in the win.
The All-Knowing-One says Hillman is still young and learning, but it will take more than this year to right the ship. Swami says seasons go in cycles as this year has been new for a majority of the squad, and is predicting that next year the Tigers will be in the thick of the conference, in addition to making a run in the postseason.
