A few precautionary steps can do wonders to prevent tragedy from striking.
Alpena Fire Chief Rob Edmonds, following a rash of fires in the Alpena area, said residents can take some simple steps -- from not overcharging lithium batteries to making sure you have smoke detectors -- to prevent fires in their own homes.
StaySafe.org, a national group that offers guidance on emergency preparedness, offers the following tips:
∫ Unplug appliances and other items when you're not using them.
∫ Use surge protectors.
∫ Never leave unattended any flames -- from stovetops to candles -- or heated appliances such as space heaters, and put out all flames when you're done with them.
∫ Have your furnace inspected regularly and keep it in good working order.
∫ Keep flammable items -- from fabrics to paper to your hair -- away from excessive heat.
∫ Don't smoke in your home.
∫ Cut down on clutter and debris such as leaves in your gutters, all of which can add fuel to a fire.
∫ Remove lint from your dryer's lint trap and make sure to change any furnace filters regularly.
∫ Keep an eye on electrical outlets for signs of trouble, such as ones that suddenly stop working, and watch cords to all of your appliances for signs of fraying or other damage.
If you follow those steps, you can help prevent the worst from happening to your property.
